Part 1: The Bottleneck of Working Memory
Long-term memory is effectively infinite, but working memory is tiny and volatile. All new learning must pass through this narrow bottleneck before it can be stored as a structured schema in long-term memory.
- Intrinsic Cognitive Load (the inherent difficulty of the concept)
- Extraneous Cognitive Load (the unnecessary mental work caused by poor presentation or confusing UI)
- Germane Cognitive Load (the productive mental effort dedicated to building mental models)
